Yet another Zombie Militia member. Work in progress......

Another character design for the children's book. For whatever reason, it's a lot easier for me to write the character, once I have a visual for him/her. Work in progress......

Some character designs for the children's book that I am currently working on. Really have to start learning Photoshop, so I can do some clean-up on these, and add some color. Work in progess......

So that you don't have to turn your head.  :.)
Just some random characters from the Richverse (yes, I said the Richverse), in my sketchbook. This will be my last post on this blog, as I will be " Tumblin' " soon.

Here are a couple of redesigns, of characters, from one of my upcoming webcomics. I doubt that these will be final designs, as I am not completely happy with them, but I think I am going in the right direction. I hope to have these digitally colored in the near future, as well. F and 2B pencil.

So, with the Green Lantern movie right around the corner, I decided to take a crack at Sinestro. I love the whole Lantern mythology, and Sinestro is the best villain in the Lantern universe. He's a complicated villain, in the way Magneto is, he thinks he is doing what is best for the universe, but clearly his methods are a bit screwed up. Unfortunately, none of the footage I have seen thus far, has me excited to see the movie. The goal is to do a colorized version with highlights, effects, etc., but man, am I struggling with the software, so it could be a while. F and 2B pencil.

Batman has the best Rogues Gallery (by far), and if you disagree, I will fight you to the death. I decided to do my take on some of them. Shown above are: The Penguin, Harley, and Killer Croc (copyright DC Comics). I think it may be time to take a stab at some Marvel characters next. These might see some color too, we'll see. F and 2B pencil.

Big Head Ned, doing what he does best, kicking some demon ass. I decided I wanted to do a follow-up piece to the original post, although I did go off model with this one. Like the last one, I am going to work on this one digitally, add some color, and throw in a background. Wish me luck! F and 2B pencil.

His name, Big Head Ned. Yet another webcomic idea from the sketchbook. Like my last post, I don't want to divulge any story information on this one. I plan on doing some stuff digitally with this one, now that my graphics tablet has arrived. It should be a fun experiment. F and 2B pencil.

Another webcomic idea, from the sketchbook. As far as the webcomic goes, I want it to be as odd, as possible. This one is about a barbarian, who is sent into the future by an evil sorcerer, loses his arm, has it replaced with a mechanical one, tries to make it back home, only to be transported back to our present day, and then....who knows. I am going to be posting a lot of random ideas like this one. F and 2B pencil.

So, I decided to pick up some colored pencils, while I was shopping at Food For Less. 24 colored pencils, for three bucks, not a bad deal. This is my first experiment with them, and I think it turned out okay, but man, is it a time consuming process. Once again, it's Bane (copyright DC Comics), as designed by Bruce Timm. F pencil and assorted colored pencils.

So, I noticed something interesting today. The artwork that I have posted on my blog, looks quite different, depending on which web browser you are using. I currently use, Google Chrome, which I love, and the art looks clean, crisp, and sharp, on Chrome, exactly as it is scanned. When I opened up the artwork on Internet Explorer, it had a fuzzy quality, and didn't read quite the same. Maybe this has to do with the fact that my blog is built through Blogger, which is a Google tool, and that it just simply works better, in conjunction with a Google built web browser? I have not downloaded Firefox, but may need to do so, just to see how things are displayed through there. Definitely interesting, not something that I had taken into consideration. I guess this would not be as big an issue, if all my artwork was inked, which is something else I may need to consider.

Well, the book and webcomic, will have to be put on hold temporarily. My brother and I, have decided to go into the T-shirt business together. With our blend of creativity, intelligence, and business acumen, I see only good things coming out of this partnership. Wish us luck!

Posing. Most of the stuff that I have posted, so far, is older stuff. This is due to the fact that I am really trying to experiment with different styles, in order to give the book a unique and bold look, therefore, I don't have much to show, as a lot of my recent drawings have ended up in the trash. What I do see in my older work, is that it is quite stiff, I definitely need a lot of improvement on my posing. I think that one of the problems, as a developing artist, is that you end up being too concerned with the final product, and wanting it to be too perfect, instead of just letting go, which creates much looser looking artwork. And as lame as it sounds, sometimes I just can't think of a cool pose, you wouldn't think it would be too hard, but part of that may be my lack of confidence as an artist. This is definitely something I plan to work on diligently, and fortunately, I have seen improvement. Let's hope that continues.
I don't really do much fan art, prefer to create my own characters, but these next few posts will contain the only fan art that I will, probably, ever have on this blog. First up, Poison Ivy (copyright DC Comics). 2H pencil.
Yet another scrapped comic book project, if I remember correctly, something to do with teens in an academy, to become space rangers. The guy with the scar, is their drill instructor. I can't believe that sounded interesting at one point. Lame. 2H pencil.
Style. It's definitely something all artists struggle with at some point in their development, trying to determine their identity as an artist. There is no question that I want to be a cartoonist, using a minimalist approach, with an economy of line. It's not as easy as I thought it would be. I am realizing that it takes a lot of skill to communicate an image properly, while also being visually striking, with the use of a few lines. That's the goal of this journey, to come up with a unique, distinctive style, that I can call my own. Wish me luck.
Who doesn't love Professor Pug? He will be in the book as well, but will also probably look a lot different, once it's all said and done. It's okay for an early draft, but needs to be more, uhh.... pug-y. 2H pencil.

These were designs for an animation pitch contest, that I did not qualify for, because I did not have a professional writing credit, still had fun with the process though, and decided to use them as ancillary characters in the book. Their design will definitely undergo some changes, as it is not in line, with how envision the final look of the characters in the book. 2H pencil.
A couple of random heads, from yet another scrapped project. These were done with a 2H pencil as well, my weapon of choice.
These were some concepts for a friend's project, aliens disguised as humans, which is why they are sans eyebrows. These were done with a 2H pencil, definitely don't draw in this style anymore, as I am far more cartoony now.
Welcome to my blog, my first official blog ever! This blog will contain mostly sketches, and character designs, for a picture book that I am working on, that will hopefully see publication one day. This blog will also chronicle my journey, and hopeful growth, as an artist. I grew up in an age where art was done traditionally, so everything you see here will be done the old-fashioned way, with pencil, markers, and colored pencils. I have nothing against digital artists, as I have great appreciation for all art, this is just a personal choice. I hope you enjoy what you see here, and all comments are welcome, and appreciated. Thank you for taking this journey with me.
